2005 Class
Guide Lines
The following are teaching guidelines for the full OEC course that were discussed and agreed upon at the OEC instructors meeting:
Teach from the OEC manual.
All protocols, techniques and procedures shall be from the OEC manual only.
Any on-the-hill techniques can be taught at your on-the-hill refresher to the
candidates that come to your hill.
Please remember we
are working with OEC students and not experienced patrollers. So, do
not introduce advanced methods that will sway us from our objective of solid
basic OEC skills for the students.
All breakout sessions will adhere
to real life practices. Don't let the students just say they are going to
do it make them do it and do it right IE...glove up, splint correctly, use
correct knots, bandaging, etc......
2.The breakout
practice session that goes with the lecture shall not exceed 30 min..
3. Manual head stabilization and
manual traction for mid-shaft Femur injuries shall not be applied until help arrives on the
scene.
A. The boot on or boot off protocol for mid-shaft Femur splinting
will be boot on.
4. Backboard straps shall be applied in the order of torso to toe
and then head secured
last. Manual head stabilization shall be applied for the entire
back-boarding process. Tape will be
applied across the forehead and chin.
5.
Follow the rules for when to backboard from the OEC manual plus we will
backboard for mid-shaft Femur fractures, Pelvic fractures, and lower
extremities dislocations. Take full spinal precautions for all back
boarding.
Let's make this class a great
learning experience and a lot of fun for all of us..
I want to thank all of you for
volunteering your time and knowledge and making this a great class all of these years.
We could not do it without you.
